Dymaxion Adaption

I had a interview for a college yesterday, I listed Polyphasic Sleep as my first hobbie/interest on the application forum (Lockpicking being the second). Needless to say it was brought up at some point. Luckily my interviewer had some sleep knowledge and we chatted about REM cycles and EEG machines, it was nice to not have the first thing after mentioning PS to be “Bu.. bu… bu…”

I will be looking into academic sleep departments of university’s for EEG machines, we need to find out what these naps look like on a neurological scale.

I will be giving a adaption update anytime from a few days from now to 2 weeks.

Also, if you haven’t, please vote on the long-term poll on the left hand side. Currently we have 31 votes:

Uberman (equidistant) and Dymaxion (equidistant) are equal in popularity. I’m sure the Uberman votes come from adaptees, and the Dymaxion come from the dymaxion-orientated hype it so loves.

After that we have Everyman in third place, which would be expected, followed by Uberman (nonequidistant).

We have 3 ‘other’ votes, looks like people like to ignore sharing what schedule they like (Tesla? Jerryman*?)

So yeah… please, vote if you haven’t! I would like to leave this poll long term and come back and examine it every now and again!

*Jerryman doesn’t exist, its there purely to confuse you.

Day 13 to 15 – Oh FUUUUUU

Right. I Haven’t updated recently because I have been angry. I had the worst two days on the 13 and 14. Im going to sum it up.

13th: Its hard to remember.. I think I had about 3 to 4 hours oversleep, in the night and morning hours.

14th: TEN hours of oversleeping, I guess this had set my adaption back significantly, and this is what annoys me. I was so close. I felt so close.. Literally one or two naps away from cracking Dymaxion. It was a stupid mistake to oversleep. I wasn’t even that tired. The original oversleep reason I think was due to me turning down the volume of my alarm… thinking I would still wake up. PRO TIP = NOISE

15th, 00:00 and 06:00 naps: I did not sleep for these, obviously due to the damn month long oversleep the day before. Uh… I guess it was heavy daydreaming, Didn’t hit N1 thats for sure.

12:00 and 18:00 naps: Slept for these.. took a good ten minutes on each to sleep however. I guess I need to get my zombieness levels back up.

ANGER. :hrmph: This is also a confidence knock as well.. I don’t know if I would carry on if I have another nightmare like I did on the 14th.

Peace.

Day 12 – Unplanned Nap

oo:oo nap: Nothing I can remember worth noting… typical nap.

90 minute unplanned nap: Laid down of sofa fo a bit, mind shut itself down.. Ouch. Im happy I woke up on my own.. I remember getting my mind into gear very fast and working out how long I slept in seconds. The adaption is there without a doubt, a dymaxion success is promising. I intend to restrict myself much more in the AM hours.

Also, later on, at around 3:00am – I’m typing away on my computer, and I hear flapping (yes, flapping, not fapping *hrmph* ) behind me, turns out the worlds cutest bat has flown into the fireplace and proceeds to fly in very tight circles around my kitchen and living room. I trap it and it stays hidden till morning, where it is released.

It amazing how silent a bat is when it flys, no sound at all. Compare to a normal bird… :o

Yeah.. this isnt a Bat Blog… more PS please!

06:00 and 12:00 naps:

I woke up easier from these naps. Nothing unique happened here.. just naps :)

18:00 nap: Waking up from this nap was very easy – not sure why, but I kinda just clicked in place.

In the last few naps, I noticed something amazing. I hear about once you are fully adapted, and you lie down for a nap, your body and mind shuts down in a matter of seconds (30 seconds I heard). The 5-30 minute period it takes for monophasers to shut down, relax and sleep is compressed into a short span of half a minute. The reason I mention this is because recently after lieing down a few minutes, my entire body suddenly feels like.. well… its shut down. I have never felt this before and I am associating this with the 30 second ‘come down’…

Hopefully will report on this more as adaption progress’s.

Day 11 – God damn it Amazon

God damn it Amazon, you know the new Skullcandy headphones I ordered? Well, being polyphasic I forgot what day it is, and since nothing happens on Sunday, and even tho I paid for express delivery.. its estimated delivery time is 3-5 August. WHAT! :angryemotionsmileyhere:

00:00 nap: These naps seem to go so fast, I woke up to my alarm, and I must have reasoned with myself: “It feels like its been only a few minutes, the nap cant be over” so I turn the alarm off and went back to sleep. Luckily, my Phone back up goes of a minute later and saves me.

06:00 nap: I drilled into my mind that laptop alarm = end of nap. So I did not have the same problem here. I wonder if I should change my password to something stupidity strange like “LDNhf8gnG” so I have to spend a minute entering it to turn the alarm off. My current password is very simple, but when sleep deprived it taked about 5 or so attempts to type it right. Luckily my zombie brain hasn’t thought of simply closing the lid to stop the music. MWHAUHAHA.

12:00 nap: Nothing insane to report.

18:00 nap: Heh, with this nap, and sometimes others I wake up, and seem convinced my nap isnt over – or I have another one right after. One of these times I actually walked downstairs after my nap, and told my brother its time for my second nap, and would have probably gone back to bed if he didnt say “Hang on, you just had your nap”

Overall, im coping pretty well… Today I have a 20 minute unplanned nap on the sofa, mainly because it had sunlight shining on it and I was cold. The bad position and loud conversations in my house stopped me from having a nightmare. I should point out also, my family have stated they WILL NOT wake me up if they seem me oversleeping. They cant really grasp the concept of sleeping less and feeling better.. sleep is a fundamental part of their lifes, and when I challenge it, the fight back illogically.

I think I must be getting REM without noticing… maybe I am still too zombiefied to work out if I dreamt or not. My mind is much more lucid recently. Overall, in the past 5 days I have had a total of 1 hour 30 to 40 minutes of Oversleeping. Not bad at all.

Day 6 to 10 – REM Expected

Hey world. No, I did not give up. I generally felt posting updates daily was jinxing my adaption. (Nothing to do with me being a lazy ass :) ).

Okay.. the other reason I stopped, was on Day 5, the 18:00 nap, I suffered an incredible 12 to 13 hour Oversleep. Apparently I was tried to be woken several times by family, also I turned my own alarm off and went back to sleep. I remember none of it, its pretty strange feeling, being told all this stuff you did when you cant remember.

Anyway, after that I decided I would hide away from my readers intill I had adapted. And im coming out the shell on day 10 since im doing better than ever, so, to sum it up:

Day 6 – Whats to say? As if I would have a problem here, everything was fine.

Day 7 – Read above… Around here/next day I worked out that the nighttimes were really going to get to me.

Day 8 – I had the entire house to myself, meaning I didn’t have to ninja my way upstairs/making food etc – and for a 3rd day, it was.. average. (Note, I kinda see day 6 to current as a “re-attempt”, since a 12/13 hour OS pretty much sets everything back.) I had alot of difficultly staying awake at some hours.

I have made it a habit to have a hour long baths at around 7-8am. These hours are where I am at my worst, and waiting that hour to go while my body temprature heats up naturally, and the day becomes brighter, really helps. My bath is a shower/bath combo, so I can lie down and keep the shower head on, stops me falling asleep. The Day 8 nighttime was worse than the Day 7 one… I found it ever harder to stay awake, Internet and Games didnt keep me awake enough… Somehow, talking to ze on the Polyphasic IRC seems to solve this. (No really, it does).

Day 9/10 – I’m sleeping every nap easily now. Tonight I have 3 people around my house for the night. Heres some random facts about what happened.

- Copoius amounts of Vodka was consumed. I did not drink, I was NOT going to risk it.

A brilliant time-waster while adapting. Minecraft!

- at 11:45 pm on day 9 – everyone thinks it’ll be a great idea to go on a walk. They go, I stay. I have my nap. This is where I have a 1 hour oversleep. It was this nap that I work out I am now zombified enough that I will sleep through my phone alarm. I now will use earphones for each nap. The hour ovesleep led my friend (who just returned from the walk) to attempt to kill me in my sleep. He held my nose so my air intake = 0. However, it worked brilliantly and I not only carry on living, but it woke me up. It is now Day 10 (today), at 1:30/40 am

I guess I lost a REM cycle to this. Considering it was the first cycle, (with monophasers, the length of REM periods get longer each cycle, the first being the shortest) I am not woried and hardly consider this a OS. Thank you friends.

The next 8 hours are very interesting.

My friends had made a vow that while on the walk, they would go to McDonalds. The nearest McDonalds is 15 miles away or so down busy main roads. One of my mates (Sutton) decides not to go. While the other two decide to go, while very drunk. I give them my support, while making a note on the standered process of a funeral service, best be ready. The intend to go buy 8 cheesburgers and fries.

I spend the next few hours bouncing around like hell between tired, very tired, and slightly tired. My friend hogs my laptop, he is playing Minecraft. It was here I find that ze from the IRC somehow makes me feel awake.

It is now 5:45 am. Sutton gets a text from our friends. They have not been run over or killed. It took them 4 hours to walk to McDonalds, a impressive feat. It turns out they did not realise that at the time of day they arrived, only the breakfast menu was to be had.

I laugh like a evil overlord.

At 7:something I have my long bath. I come down to find my friends had reunited, and walked back. I also come down to find they are all asleep, and one of them have stolen my pillows and blankets etc to sleep with. Damn it. I get my revenge by waking them up by playing Guitar Hero.

As Day 10 progressed I napped fine, and managed to cope better. I know now that I am in zombie mode, and its at night it REALLY hits me. I am worried for the next 10 hours…

My new earphones, which better come tomorrow.

Also, my earphones have broken on one side. So I spent £25 on some expensive Skullcandy ones from Amazon, and paid extra to HOPEFULLY get them delivered tomorrow. These new headphones have MUCH better noise reduction, as well as fitting oh so very neatly. Only a tiny band of ducktape will be needed. I found normal Cellatape does not stick well to the skin, Ducktape is the way to go.

It is now about a hour till the opening midnight nap for day 11. Ze tells me in IRC that I should be over the hump within a day (or 2). I expect REM very, very soon.
